Summer 2023 Social Innovation Internship

The Social Innovation Internships through the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking at Yale and the Yale Club of New Haven are designed to connect New Haven-based entrepreneurial non-profits, social enterprises, and social change agencies with qualified and enthusiastic Yale College students for a summer internship experience centered around social innovation (current seniors are eligible to apply).

The 2023 Social Innovation Interns will:

  • Have a hybrid internship at a New Haven-based non-profit organization for eight weeks during the summer of 2023, beginning on Tuesday, May 30th
  • Receive a stipend of $4,000 (W-9 payment, subject to self-employment tax)
  • Be assigned an immediate supervisor who will advise and work closely with them.
  • Have an immersive experience in non-profit and social entrepreneurial processes through engagement in the projects outlined below
  • Leave the internship with new skills and experiences to share with the Yale community upon return.

This year we are partnering with Freedom Reads (freedomreads.org) to provide two fellowship opportunities:

Research and Storytelling Intern

Freedom Reads is seeking a passionate and energetic Research and Storytelling Intern to support our Freedom Library initiative and ancillary programs to encourage access to literature in prisons across the country. Over the summer, we hope you will gain knowledge and skills around research and creative storytelling strategies.

As the Research and Storytelling Intern, you will work closely with Freedom Reads’s Program Manager to design and conduct a comprehensive capstone project studying the stories, policies or histories shaping our patrons' engagements with Freedom Libraries. This will include researching, engaging with Freedom Reads’s archives, corresponding with library patrons, drafting surveys, and interviewing relevant stakeholders. As a result of your efforts, we hope to increase our engagement with library patrons, bring our libraries to more prisons, and celebrate the efforts of those incarcerated to counter with literature what prison does to the spirit.

Additionally, in this role, you will support our collection’s maintenance. This will include but not be limited to working with Freedom Reads fellows on a catalog for our 500-book collection and our Young Reader List. This also includes assisting in the maintenance of our Book Circles initiative, writing discussion questions for National Book Award-winning titles, and providing feedback on catalog entries.

Research and Development Intern

Freedom Reads seeks a passionate and energetic Research and Development Intern to support our Freedom Library initiative and organizational growth. Over the summer, we hope you will gain knowledge and skills around research and non-profit growth strategies.

As the Research and Development Intern, you will work closely with Freedom Reads’s Program Manager and Production Manager to design and conduct a comprehensive capstone project on the stories, policies, and histories that inform prisons with Freedom Libraries. This will include researching, engaging with Freedom Reads’s archives, corresponding with library patrons, drafting surveys, and interviewing relevant stakeholders. As a result of your efforts, we hope to increase our engagement with incarcerated library patrons, bring our libraries to more prisons, and celebrate the efforts of those incarcerated to counter with literature what prison does to the spirit.

Additionally, in this role, you will support external communications with Freedom Reads stakeholders, research grant opportunities, and work with partners and supporters to grow the Freedom Reads’s network. Other tasks will include supporting volunteers in our woodworking Community Build Weekends and planning special events.
