Victoria Hewlett (Yale College ’19) arrived in New Haven knowing she was interested in community organizing and developing a more sustainable, just, and community-centered economy. Before transferring to Yale College from Northeast State Community College in Tennessee, she had worked on a team research project on Appalachian economic history and public health.

Yale brought Caroline Tanbee Smith ’14 B.S. and Margaret Lee ’14 B.A. to New Haven from their respective Kentucky homes, but it was the city and the community that enticed them to stay long after graduation. “One of the reasons we go to school is to receive a holistic education,” says Tanbee Smith, who co-founded the community accelerator Collab with Lee not long after they graduated. “It’s an opportunity to be a part of a of a larger city.”

On July 11, Statera Therapeutics — a healthcare startup led by Yale students and recent grads — took the grand prize at the NYU-Yale Summer Accelerator Pitchoff, sharing their idea with a lively crowd in Manhattan. Statera’s victory brought the pitchoff’s trophy to New Haven for the second consecutive year.
