The concept of art imitating life was on full display on April 12, as students and community members gathered at the Center for Collaborative Arts and Media for the “Art Meets Biology: Interactive Design Workshop, Microscope Images Plus Adobe.”

On April 27, Yale held its first podcasting and audio conference, called “PodCon.” Hosted by Nick Quah, Podcast & Digital Media Fellow at Tsai CITY, the conference began with breakfast and a keynote by Andy Bowers (’86), Chief Content Officer at Panoply Media. The morning sessions covered podcast and industry basics, with panels on “Night Vale Presents: Building a Podcast Business” and “Technological Opportunities and Challenges for Growth.”

As part of Startup Yale, several teams of entrepreneurs vied for five $25,000 awards during the pitch-off competitions. Each team was given 10 minutes for a presentation, followed by another 10 minutes of questioning by a panel of judges, who later deliberated and chose the winning team. Audience members were able to vote for their favorites as well.

This past Tuesday, on March 27, 2018, WE@Yale’s Breakfast series was excited to host Rosie Atkins, the current Vice President of Product Development at Homebase, an early to mid-stage startup that builds and uses software to address issues of work scheduling.

Not long after Amanda Rinderle and Jonas Clark started together at Yale’s SOM, they determined the world needs another shirt. Not just any shirt, but one representing the finest quality workwear, from a company modeling ethical consciousness and sustainable environmental practices.

Chaos engulfed the Center for Collaborative Arts and Media (CCAM) on the evening of February 9, 2018. The participants in The Reality of Global Climate Change Hackathon were busy getting into teams, brainstorming ideas, and even starting work. By the next day, each team was to present an experience using virtual reality that addressed one of four prompts relating to the effects of climate change.

Though Levi DeLuke (’14) and Ellen Su (’13) started recently as Mentors in Residence at Tsai CITY, there is no need to welcome them. They are familiar faces at what was once the Yale Entrepreneurial Institute where, as undergrads in 2014, they launched Wellinks, a wearable medical device company.

More than 100,000 people die every year in Africa from counterfeit medicines, and that number is increasing. Adebayo Alonge (SOM ’16), a student in the SOM Master of Advanced Management program, knows all too well. He nearly died from counterfeit drugs in a Nigerian hospital.

Konstantine Drakonais, one of our new Mentors in Residence, is an experienced early-stage entrepreneur and investor focused on proprietary IMPACT technologies. As an “Entrepreneurial Engineer,” he gravitates to technology companies within the software, med-tech and green-tech markets. He has led over 40 investments for LaunchCapital and the Pritzker Vlock Family Office to date and serves as a strategic adviser for many of his portfolio companies.
