Recasting the Artist as Entrepreneur: A Workshop Series with Midnight Oil Collective | Oct 13th

entrance at Tsai CITY

Enough of the “starving artist” already. Artists are highly-skilled, innovative humans who create products that people want. But today’s artists are often advised to rely on intermediaries (agents, managers, producers) to launch their projects—rather than being taught how they might organize and drive their own work forward. The goal of the intensive is to empower artists with financial and business skills so they can dream even bigger and structure and lead their own projects. By the end of the series, students will be able to create and share plans for their own arts ventures that include SMART goals, next steps, and possible funding sources.

This interactive session will include a short lecture, a breakout discussion, and insight from a panel of arts and business professionals. All material will be presented through Zoom, though we will have several opportunities for direct student engagement.

Objectives

  • Participants will understand the major goals of the course.
  • Participants will reframe some of the perceived problems and scarcity in the field as opportunities.
  • Participants will think of a project that might present interesting opportunities.
  • Individual challenge: What is a piece of work or project that you have created or want to create–or want to work on as a performer–that you think has the potential to connect with an audience or market and that you think would be artistically fulfilling for you?
