Internship Overview
Freedom Reads is seeking two summer interns to collaborate on impactful projects that contribute to shaping the national conversation on social innovation and mass incarceration. Interns will gain hands-on experience in research, content creation, and project development, working closely with the Freedom Reads team to support initiatives that amplify the voices of incarcerated individuals and promote access to literature.
This paid internship provides a $4,000 stipend and requires interns to work in-person or hybrid at Freedom Reads’ office in New Haven. Participants will have a hands-on role in shaping initiatives that expand access to books, amplify incarcerated voices, and drive meaningful discussions on mass incarceration. About Freedom Reads
Freedom Reads’ mission is to inspire and confront what prison does to the spirit by bringing handcrafted bookcases into prisons and transforming cell blocks into Freedom Libraries. Founded in 2020 with a $5.25 million grant from the Mellon Foundation, Freedom Reads is the only organization in the country using the power of a library to honor the dignity of people in prison. Since late 2021, the organization has opened 419 Freedom Libraries in 44 correctional facilities and youth prisons and has distributed over 239,000 books to incarcerated readers across the U.S.

Internship Responsibilities
Interns will support one or more distinct projects, defined based on their interests, skills, and goals. Potential tasks may include:
- Contributing to new and ongoing projects (e.g., scoping, background research, program design).
- Conducting research and data management (e.g., literature reviews, market research, qualitative and descriptive data analysis).
- Developing content for social media platforms (e.g., creating content for X, Facebook, and Instagram).
- Producing reports, memos, slide decks, blog posts, and other written outputs.
Internship Qualifications
This internship is open to students with diverse academic backgrounds. Any combination of professional experience, volunteer work, coursework, and transferable skills may be applied toward these qualifications.
Ideal candidates should have:
- Strong writing, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Superior interpersonal and teamwork abilities.
- Experience managing multiple tasks with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to translate complex research and data into compelling reports and presentations.
- Enthusiasm for learning new skills and working in a collaborative environment.
